ThatGuyWhoLikesPandas.com
What is it?
ThatGuyWhoLikesPandas.com is my hobbyist project, displaying both my programming and writing capabilities. The website is constantly under development. It has been programmed with .NET 6.0 and it is hosted on an external VPS. I develop the website according to my needs and ideas to showcase what I am capable of as a web developer. I also write the occasional story and publish them on this site for my own enjoyment.
How has it been developed?
I have utilized the skills and knowledge I have acquired on my web developer career to program and maintain this website. As a web developer, I adhere to these three design principles:
-
Responsivness
When developing a website I make sure it looks appealing on both desktop and mobile. I use Bootstrap to plan the grid layout for every page, and organize the elements in a way that makes browsing the site simple.
-
Ease of use
I would further divide "ease of use" into three categories: availability, clarity and recognition. My goal is to have my website being accessible to all visitors, I make the page layout as intuitive as possible and I make the website elements' functions recognizable by their visual design.
-
Simplicity
One of my favorite quotes I learned on my career is the following: "You're not done when there's nothing left to add. You're done when there's nothign left to take away." In design I favor simple color palettes, fonts and minimalistic page contents.
The technology stack I use with this particular website is the following:
- .NET 6.0, including EntityFramework Core
- CSS, Bootstrap
- JavaScript, with JQuery and GSAP
- MS SQL Server
If you're interested in the website's source code, you can find it in the public GitHub repository here.
What are the main inspirations for the pieces of writing?
One of my hobbies is reading. I read a lot of books, mostly non-fiction but also some fiction on the side. As it is with every other person, instances of media we consume shape our views and how we approach life. If I had to name any works of entertainment that have shaped the way I write about things and life in general, I would name the following:
-
The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy
What makes the book fun to read is not what Douglas Adams wrote, but how he wrote. I read this book at an early age and it taught me the power behind dry satire and imaginatively constructed similies. Other authors claimed to have been inspired by Douglas Adams, such as Yahtzee Croshaw, have contributed to my writing style by their works as well.
-
Blackadder
This British sitcom starring Rowan Atkinson is hands-down one of the funniest things I have ever seen, and greatly contributes to my sense of humor. Someone once said that there is no genuinely funny compliment, and this series makes me think of that phrase. The main character Blackadder is one of the great meanies in TV history, constantly picking on people around him and oozing contempt. The way the show cleverly expressed how such a mind works and the way the characters delivered the ingeniously- written insults, revealed me how much more powerful a comedic tool a negative is compared to a positive.
